Many of us are surprised at the rapid spread and growing impact the Coronavirus is having on our society. This threat has quicly affected almost every aspect of our day-to-day lives.
Small businesses may be hardest hit. Many businesses feel uncertain how to move forward as stability in the marketplace decreases. But we know that we must endure, the inevitable recovery depends on it.
As of 2017, 97% of Ontario businesses were small businesses with 1-99 employees. Many members of This Great City fit into the 73.4% of Canadian small businesses; these have between 1 and 9 employees. This is a significant segment of our marketplace.
First and foremost, I want to assure City Leaders, Members and friends that we are taking all appropriate measures to ensure our response to the Coronavirus addresses the need for safety. While the Public Health Agency of Canada has assessed the current public health risk associated with coronavirus as low, we continue to monitor for developments very closely.
We have decided to postpone all monthly public networking events and public business events until June 2020 when we will assess the situation at that time. Our hope if that the situation will have improved and we can start holding regular public events monthly. In the interim, we will plan online referral building and networking events starting in early April.
I also encourage all involved to strengthen member businesses during this time wherever possible. These are currently and have the potential to be difficult times for small businesses in Ontario. Therefore we encourage members and friends to patronage members and to refer members at every opportunity.
We are working tirelessly to do what’s best for City Leaders, Members and friends. We are proud of our growing network, and look forward to seeing you again soon.
